About David Botkins

David Botkins is the founder and CEO of Botkins Strategies, LLC, a Virginia-based strategic communications and public affairs consultancy.

He brings 35 years of experience across energy, government, politics and journalism. David began his career as an award-winning newspaper reporter and later held communications and advisory roles for a Virginia governor, attorney general, cabinet official, state agency and political campaigns.

For more than 23 years, David served in senior communications roles at Dominion Energy, one of the nation’s largest energy companies. His work included media relations, crisis and emergency communications, public policy, executive counsel and translating complex energy issues for public audiences. He regularly advised senior leaders and worked at the intersection of business, government, media, politics and public opinion.

Through Botkins Strategies, David counsels executives, organizations and public figures confronting consequential issues. His work focuses on strategic communications, public affairs, energy policy, reputation management, stakeholder engagement and message development. Clients value his judgment, discretion and ability to identify the practical issue inside a complicated one.

David is also a published commentator on energy, politics, American history and leadership. His columns have appeared in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, The Virginian-Pilot, Daily Press, and Cardinal News, among others. He also publishes a Substack focused on public issues and the institutions and traditions that shape civic life.

David’s public service includes appointments from Republican and Democratic governors. He currently serves on the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation Board of Trustees, the Wilton House Museum Board of Trustees, the Virginia Society Sons of the Revolution Board of Managers, and the Citizens Advisory Council on Furnishings and Interpretation of the Executive Mansion.

These roles reflect his longstanding involvement in historic preservation, civic education and Virginia’s public life.

David also serves on the Miss Virginia Organization’s advisory board. He has helped prepare multiple state and teen titleholders for competition and has served as a judge for the Miss Virginia and Miss Georgia programs. He sees that work as an extension of his longstanding commitment to leadership, communications, service and supporting young women as they develop as leaders and communicators.

A graduate of the University of Kentucky, David also completed the Mini MBA program through Executive Education at the University of Richmond's Robins School of Business. He lives in Henrico County, Virginia.
